Durham & Northumberland Two / Working together
« on: May 05, 2020, 09:24:16 AM »
Saw this from a rugby journo on Twitter the other day.... really got me thinking... how can clubs work together to ensure we don't see any go to the wall while income is flattened. I know it has been mentioned some clubs are nervously watching the situation... but if you look at it there may be no rugby for some time... if you are a club with high outgoings it must be a concern....

Rugby is going to need to pull together next season.

No profit taking.

No bonuses.

No 'I'm alright, Jack'.

A game that has never had proper money, now has even less.

The saracens scandal,
the 6 nations going behind the sky paywall,
withdrawal of funding for championship clubs,
the withdrawal of travel funding for clubs forced to travel to satisfy the league system,
the apparent allowing of big clubs to field 2nd teams in to the league
The lack of regard for grass roots of the game
The shocking treatment of elite female players at the top of the game.. on/off contracts, cold showers,  unprepped dirty changing areas.
Player and coach payments at level 7,8 &9
Clubs offering 'incentives' to students for short term results
The uproar against rugbys characters when they express an opinion or tickle the odd fancy!

Rugby is depressing me at the minute... those decision makers in our game seem so out of touch with me and my rugby values. Its seeming to move further and further away from the game that took an angry kid in danger of getting expelled from school off the streets and gave me a focus away from some pretty bad life choices i could potentially have made. Through my teens when my mates at the time fell into crime and drugs i was playing this beautiful game with values that took me away from all of this. It was a game for all, ive played and drank with and become mates with labourers, dentists, farmers, doctors, barristers, bin men, elite players and 4th team journeymen.

I fear for where the game is going... i really do. How can we stop it? How can we safeguard the future of clubs like chester le street and washington when the rfu dont seem bothered about them? How can we attract more youngsters to play and engage the game when we tuck our best role models and gateway competitions such as the 6 nations behind a paywall many like me when inwas young couldnt afford it... or just wouldnt pay to watch a sport they dont really understand.

I can see a future where we have an elite comp and about 4 leagues underneath full of superfit super strong under 30s and the days of the 70 year old playing 4th team with his son and grandson to beung lost to us within 10 years.

Sad times

Durham & Northumberland Two / pre season tournaments?
« on: August 03, 2019, 12:44:57 PM »
Anyone running a pre season tournament this year? I know Jarrovians and Ryton used to run one but Ive not seen any advertised. We have a few new lads who are new to rugby and a mix of lads with experience so was just looking for something to help get some game time up ahead of the season?

If your having a tournament let us know!

Durham & Northumberland Two / Junior cup final
« on: April 17, 2019, 10:04:23 PM »
Watched this cup final tonight between winlaton and ryton... really good game, winlaton dominating the 1st half but ryton dominating the 2nd. Ryton winning it with the result in doubt until ryton scored the decisive try right at the final whistle.

Rytons 11 was an outstanding player and probably had the class to play at a higher standard.

Was a good game... i couldnt find mugsy but congratulations to.you and your lads, please pass on to billy mordue as well

Other Senior Rugby / Help!!

Hi bit of a tale of woe here :-[

Basically, i fairly desperately seek 2 tickets to Ireland v England 6 nations game next week.

I have promised tickets to my good ladies dad purchased via our club and he has subsequently gone out purchased flights and hotels for him and his mates.

I go to club to pick up said tickets and to my horror i discover ive actually bought summer international tickets. I basically have one week to sort this out or im gonna have my head in my hands.

Does anyone have 2 spare tickets? Obviously i would pay for them
Does.anyone know anyone who does?
Have any clubs not taken their allocation?

Please someone help?

Other Senior Rugby / Farrells tackle
« on: November 05, 2018, 05:19:39 PM »
Red or not red... Pen or not pen?

For me he makes a reasonable attempt at a wrap, doesn't get it but his 'spare' arm movement saves him (and England). His lead arm is open, fair tackle for me. The law says an attempt to wrap must be made.

I hate the no arm tackle, ive seen some awful injuries off the back of them, no attempt to wrap, shoulder barges and front on smashes often after the ball has long gone. In my book if you tackle someone its your job to get them to ground as safe as you can... Nowt wrong with a hard tackle but at least if you wrap your arm you can control what happens to the player your tackling.

What do people think?

Other Senior Rugby / RFU redundancies vs Commercial ticket sales
« on: October 08, 2018, 03:44:50 PM »
With some 60 job cuts across the board (many of which affect the community game)
& c.26 million over spend..RFU have finaly unveiled Twickenham's new 80 million East Stand.

Meanwhile a substantial reduction of sponsorship for the 6 Nations a fairly average looking England set up at present and domestic rugby comp

Grass roots rugby where once clubs ran up to 7 sides and even the smaller clubs ran 2 and 3, most now only running 2 or 3 sides. Once proud clubs no longer in the league system or dropping to the foot of it.

What are the RFU doing to arrest the issues facing our modern game?

I have to say, I'm gravely worried about the future of our beautiful game or am I just a grumpy old badger?

Just wondering peoples thoughts on this... Increasingly in my observations of the local rugby scene im seeing club crying off 2nds or 3rds fixtures but still honouring 3rd and 4ths fixtures... How can this happen? Surely you should always fulfil the highest fixture available or its a poor show? Should there be club sanctions for this?

It also seems to be the 'Bigger' Clubs who are the biggest offenders.. This weekend I would imagine is particularly prevelant with very little first team rugby on.

How do we as a rugby community solve this problem?

Whats peoples take on this innocent in law but sacked by ulster and ireland... its an interesting debate. Their behaviour for me was reprehensible and yet they have mot committed any crime and have been found not guilty by a jury.. nobody was there that night and no one will ever truly know what happened except those involved... were ireland and ulster right to sack them?
